Environmental and Public Health Problems
Environmental and public health problems influenced the fall of the Roman Empire. During the Roman Empire, the rich had water sent to them by lead pipes. The death rate became very high because the water was not purified like what the aqueducts did. Even the Colosseum spread disease because of the many deaths. Some of the Roman citizens caught disease from the poor on the streets. Alcohol influenced the death rate too. Environmental and public health problems influenced the fall of the Roman Empire.

Barbarian Invasions
Barbarian Invasions
It was Rome and the Western Empire that felt the full force of the invasions. Rome fell because German barbarians were ferociously attacking the empire when Rome was weak and out of order. The first ones to invade Rome were the Goths. The Goths were barbarians who were fleeing the Huns, seeking for protection from Rome, which was still standing very strong and powerful at the time. Rome gave protection to the Goths, but later the Goths raised their swords against the Romans themselves. In the late 300's, the Goths started to raid deep into the heart of the empire. Emperors were desperately trying to get rid of the Goths, and in the eastern half, they were successful and pushed them farther back. Next, came the Huns. Once the Goths were pushed back, the Huns started to attack Rome. Huns were strong warriors who came from Central Asia and had moved into Europe. They started to raid southeastern Europe and then attacked kingdoms close by. The Goths came back and nearly destroyed Rome in 410. After the Goths served an example, other barbarian groups including the Jutes, Angles, and Saxons invaded Britain. In addition, the Franks and the Burgundians raided Gaul. A new group called the Vandals started to raid Rome too. The Vandals were deadly and destroyed everything in their path. In the end, the main enemies were the Goths, the Huns, and the Vandals, who all together made the western part of the empire fall.

Urban Decay
Urban Decay
Urban Decay was one of the ten main reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire had to endure a series of elevated payments for the military, so many Romans became poor. The wealthy, owned houses which had designs on colored tiles, glass pane windows, and were completed with marble walls. This type of house was called a domus. The poor however, had to live in 6 floor apartments called "islands" which were very foul smelling. They were also usually unsafe and very torrid. The higher the floor was, the cheaper the price got. The more stairs your family had to climb everyday, the cheaper the price. Those Romans who could not afford to even live in an apartment, were bound to survive on the violent streets as a homeless. Houses that had not become inhabited by people for a long time, usually gave way to criminals. These criminals couldn't take care of the houses properly and they soon collapsed. Rome kept on receiving corrupt emperors who were greedy and only cared about gaining power. These emperors didn't keep Rome's apartments and streets healthy, which also crumbled buildings. Since there were many Romans that were homeless, they ganged up and made the streets dangerous. The criminal rate got higher and higher. Later, many cities started to decay, one of the reasons for the fall of Rome. ~Emily Tran
